Even if You Hate Math, the 2018 Audi RS3 Adds Up to Exclusive Fun!

Once upon a time, the exclusivity of a premium car was predicated by price and prestige. While these factors still apply, the unique breed found in the Audi Sport performance niche provides its own substance. Where that special “stuff” varies from badge to badge, the sort found in the all-new 2018 Audi RS3 is nothing short of immersive.

Although some models were offered on our shores for the 2017 model year, the 2018 RS3 marks the first time drivers from our corner of South Carolina have experienced the unique performance this compact athlete has on tap. It all starts with the engine—the heart and soul of any RS-badged model—which is special in its own right. Instead of four or six cylinders, the RS3 packs a 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder under the hood.

But here’s where it gets more interesting. Instead of 350-odd ponies offered on the outgoing European model, Audi Sport tuned this one with 400 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque—good for a 3.9-second route to sixty. Although accepting that we’re in for a quicker RS3 than the one we pined for is easy, the fact that it was developed with the U.S. market at the forefront of their minds ought to make one feel warm and fuzzy.

Those feelings will only grow when one gets behind the wheel, where the result of Quattro GmbH division’s engineering chops have room to flex. First up is the exhaust note—a crackling, burbling, snarl owed to the five-pot’s 1-2-4-5-3 cylinder firing order and rally-car inspirations, which make the car unique in and of itself. Combined that with the vice-like grip of quattro all-wheel drive, and the blistering acceleration, and one might find the RS3’s experience unexpectedly evocative.

That’s because the RS3’s specifically-tuned quattro system isn’t about limits. In fact, with a rear differential capable of swallowing three times the engine’s rated torque, the on-board computers are literally programmed to hurl as much twist as possible at the rear axle. Read that once more time—not as much as necessary, but as much as is feasible. That’s enough to make one start doing mental math before remembering how much you hate arithmetic.
